These products are usually sold in the form of sprays, lotions and cream gels. The active ingredient in this product is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The DHA reacts with the dead cells located in the outer layer of the skin when used and the skin temporarily turns tan. It cannot be washed off but it usually lasts for 5-7 days. FDA considers the ingredient DHA safe when used in the skin.

it causes the skin to age faster, make sure to use tanning lotions to moisturize the skin before going into the tanning bed

As for sun bathing, there are still a number of people who are doing it to get a tan. But even if you do it once, you are still risking yourself in getting skin diseases and the worst of it can be cancer. Using sunblock with high SPF content will help lessen the risk but it is not guaranteed that it will prevent skin diseases. Also, you will not be able to do sun bathing anytime unlike sunless tanning products wherein you can get a tan no matter what the weather is.

While it is fun to go sun bathing with your friends, it is also dangerous, so why risk your self if there is a safer alternative which is sunless tanning.
